Bering-uClibc-6.1.0-beta1 provides significant updates and improvements for webconf.

Most important updates are new kernels (4.9.39 for i486 and x86_64; 4.9.34 for arm toolchains),
busybox updated to 1.27.0 and perl updated to 5.26.0.
lighttpd configuration has been reworked to become a replacement for mini_httpd(s); the default
leaf.cfg for the imgages has been updated to reflect this change.

Other packages updated are keepalived (1.3.5), libtirpc (1.0.2), openvpn (2.4.3), radius (2.2.10),
screen (4.6.1), shorewall (5.1.5), sqlite (3.19.03) and tor (0.3.0.9).
As usual security fixes and package updates of latest maintenance version for 6.0.x has been included as well.

In case you want use webconf via https (recommended) you need to build, and add the certificate.
A short recipe how to do is availbale via “help lighttpd”.
Note: While this gives a start, there are better options - like building the
certificate on a seperate computer, or using letsencrypt (https://letsencrypt.org/).

Bering-uClibc-6.1.0-alpha1 provides major updates for our build base, a
major kernel upgrade and various other improvements.

uClibc-ng has been upgraded to 1.0.22

root.lrp and config.lrp has been merged into initrd.lrp

the huge libinconv package (approx 600kb) has been replaced
by the uClibc-ng implementation (adding a few kb to initrd.lrp)

gcc has been updated to 5.4.0

binutils has been updated to 2.27

The kernel has been updated to new LTS version 4.9

Two new packages has been added:
ca-certificates, providing a list of Certification
Authorities. It is based on the Debian package, which itself provides the ones from
Mozilla (version 20161130)

dehydrated: An ACME client implementation for Let’s Encrypt (https://letsencrypt.org/)

Of the other updated packages, the important will be shorewall, updated to 5.1.1,
where /etc/shorewall/masq has been replaced with /etc/shorewall/snat and a slightly newer
syntax:
old (masq):
   eth0 192.168.1.0/24
new (snat):
   MASQUERADE eth0 192.168.1.0/24

Therefor you’ll need to run “shorewall update” before reboot; have a look into the
eventual error messages and resolve issues, save the configuration before reboot.
After reboot remove /etc/shorewall/masq.bak and save the config again to get rid of that file.

Pls note: Currently only x86 platforms are supported.

Bering-uClibc-6.0.0 introduces the new major version of LEAF Bering-uClibc.

After a year development started and five month after the first alpha release
a new major version of LEAF Bering-uClibc is considered stable.

Major features of the 6.0.0 version are:

upgrading uClibc to uClibc-ng, receiving maintenance and regular updates (1.0.17)

upgrading to current LTS Linux kernel 4.4 (4.4.26)

initmod.lrp has been removed, after having been splitted from initrd.lrp four years ago.
The kernel drivers previously loaded from initmod.lrp are now either included in the kernel or
will be loaded by demand, like shorewall init does.
This way we free up RAM and it will improve boot time significantly.

a new WRAP optimized kernel and image is provided

firmware is saved via local.lrp

logrotation has been improved (see /etc/logrotate.d/syslog)
In addition /var/log/messages has been removed, previously containing entries also available in other
log files and therefore only wasting (RAM) space.

A new package libpam to support PAM access with openvpn has been added (Thx to dino muzic for his help getting that done)

perl has been updated to 5.24.0

The Raspberry image, still a proof of concept, supports booting with device tree (and overlays)

Support for PCEngines APU2 incl watchdog support and booting from SD card

Most of the remaining packages has received updates to the latest
upstream versions.

See Bering-uClibc 6.0.x Changelog
for more details.

Upgrade considerations

Please note: Due to the removal of initmod upgrading from 5.x to 6.0.0 will not work as seamless
as usual.
If you don’t setup a new router from scratch, be aware that you have to change syslinux.cfg otherwise
it may fail to boot.

To get an upgrade properly done, you need to replace

DEFAULT linux initrd=/initrd.lrp,/initmod.lrp

with

DEFAULT linux initrd=/initrd.lrp

(See also Bering-uClibc_6.x - User Guide - Appendices - Upgrading from Bering-uClibc_5.x)

In the past the upgrade utility has been improved, but due to changes outlined above it won’t work
to use it to upgrade from 5.2.x to 6.0.0.
As a result we do not offer 6.0.0 for the upcoming weeks. Once we add 6.0.0 to latest or stable,
please do not use upgrade to update your 5.2.x router without taking the above made considerations seriously.
It may work, if you change syslinux.cfg by hand, but it isn’t recommended douing this without a proper backup or dual boot solution.

With 6.0.0 becoming stable, the 5.2 series will be put on hold with one, final release left for 5.2.8.

LEAF Bering-uClibc 6.0.0-alpha1 is available for testing.
It is the start of a major upgrade and provides significant improvements for LEAF Bering-uClibc.

uClibc has been upgraded to it successor uClibc-ng (version 1.0.14)

gcc has been updated to 5.3.0

kernel has been upgraded to the latest LTS version 4.4 (currently 4.4.11)

a WRAP optimized kernel and serial image has been added

Modules previously provided with initmod, installed by default and used to find
the disks to load leaf.cfg has been moved into the kernel. initmod.lrp is history and gone.
Modules not built into the kernel are now autodetected during startup if they are related
to the hardware, or defined in /etc/modules.
In addition modules required by a specific application can be loaded during applications init,
like shorewall does.
This simplifies modules handling, improves startup time and reuqired RAM (see example below).

Other significant updates has been made for perl (5.22.1), busybox (1.24.2), bash (4.3.30p42)
and shorewall (5.0.7.2).
Minor updates are provided for dhcpcd, nano, rsync, util-linux and clamav.

openvpn and openvpnz has been merged into one package: openvpn - including
lzo compression as default, previously openvpnz. Linux-PAM authentication support
has added (requires libpam).

The following stats gives a rough impression of the improvements:

Version 5.2.6-rc1
boot time 57 sec
df (used RAM)	42%
du / 16,9 MB
kernel size	1,8 MB

Version 6.0.0-alpha1
boot time	47 sec
df (used RAM)	34%
du / 13,7 MB
kernel size	2,3 MB

(done in Virtualbox with i486 ISO image default configuration,
boot time measured until login prompt is reached and includes
first-time key generation, ssh-dss and ecdsa-sha2-nistp521, for dropbear)

Bering-uClibc-5.2.5-rc1 updates the kernel to 4.1.18 and adds vitualization guest support, though this may need further testing.
To deal with Sourceforge redirecting to https, the upgrade utility unconditionally opens port 80 and 443 for upgrade.
Retry on failure in retrieve and add –no-check-certificate to wget has been added in upgrade.
In addition wget has been removed and replaced by wget-ssl.lrp, which is now named wget.lrp.

Amongst the usual updated packages libgd (also fixed armv6 build), libpng, nettle, nsd, openldap and pmacct.
iproute has been updated to 4.4.0 and fixes “action connmark” failures in tc.lrp.

Any feedback is welcome; please write a mail to leaf-user mailinglist if anything fails, or if the update just works for you.

If you use the upgrade utility, be aware that you either use busybox wget (default) or wget-ssl to upgrade your router.

The release candidate of the first maintenance release of LEAF Bering-uclibc 5.2 (5.2.1)
provides an updated kernel (4.1.12), security fixes (esp. ntp) and updated Packages for dbus, wpa_supplicant
dbus, keepalived and monit.

The config Package introduces a new upgrade script. It will alleviate upgrading your
LEAF router to new versions. It offers downloading the Packages, kernel etc. from a
remote repository to your storage device, either merging config changes via patch or by
running apkg -u if config changes are detected, so the user can decide how to deal with
changes. In out tests updating a LEAF router with 200 Packages has been a task of a few minutes,
though it depends on the speed of your Internet connection.

Note: It may be necessary to increase the size of the /tmp partition for the upgrade process,
it is calculated by the script and will give you a hint before it starts to do the real work.
Also your firewall be opened if needed, to fetch the Packages via port 80.
If changed, it will be closed afterwards.

While this feature has been tested by the developers, better be safe than sorry and backup your
router with scp before running upgrade.

New applets added to busybox are patch and wget. You may check if those applets can replace the Packages for patch and wget.

After more than a year of development Bering-uClibc-5.2 is released as new major, stable version
of LEAF Bering-uClibc.

It is based on the latest Linux longtime kernel 4.1 and provides significant updates
for various packages, new packages and improvements of the user experience.

The squashfs based modules.sqfs replaces the tar-gzipped tarball modules.tgz.
This reduces RAM size during autodetection. Additionally autodetection of modules
has been improved to run during boot; so in most cases saving modules is only necessary
if you want to reduce boot time, or if you have minimal space on your boot media.

Among the major package updates, the most notable ones are perl, squid and snort.

At the end of a successful year for LEAF Bering-uClibc, version 5.0.2 has been released on 28 Dec.
LEAF Bering-uClibc 5.0.2 updates the Linux kernel version to 3.4.74, introduces a new package ddclient with freedns support as replacement for ezipupdate, stabilizes shorewall logging using ulogd (finally! ulogd has been the default log target in the 3.x series) and provides updates to latest upstream versions for numerous packages, as well as usual bugfixes.

As one of the most important fixes, we like to point to the fix for the e3 editor showing garbage on 64-bit systems.

Amongst the package updates, we'd like to highlight the move to libusb 1.x, while we still provide a new package libusb-compat for packages, that are still based on libusb 0.x like the nut usb-driver package.

Not really a new feature, but worth a note, is the replacement of the old ascii splash image with a new boot logo showing the recent LEAF logo for the iso images. You can also stop the boot process at that point to adjust the boot commandline.

After more than one year of developement the LEAF Bering-uClibc team announces the first beta version of LEAF Bering-uClibc 5.0.
Bering-uClibc 5.0 is basically Bering-uClibc 4.x brought up to date with the latest versions of the main software components. But the most important changes are:

The Linux kernel is upgraded from 2.6.x to a recent long-term release (3.4.34)

The uClibc library is upgraded from 0.9.30 to 0.9.32.

The toolchain (formerly known as buildenv) has been reworked to support more processors. Currently only images for X86_64 images are provided, but as a proof-of-concept an arm-versatile based version can be build as well.

Usage of the toolchain has been alleviated in various aspects.

We've enabled more busybox applets (applets ifenslave, vconfig, bunzip2, unlzma, lzma, modinfo, setserial, beep, chat, mpstat, pstree, watch, nohup) and enabled verbose help messages for busybox applets.

zram support has been added (See the Bering-uClibc 5.x User Guide "Configuring leaf.cfg" for more details).

Work on Bering-uClibc 5.x started in October 2011, with Andrew as the lead developer and contributions from kapeka, Erich Titl, davidMbrooke and Yves Blusseau among others.

It was noticed that 2.64 contains a nasty regression: it doesn't actually cache DNS queries at all. An oversight in the max-cache-ttl patch means that the cached TTL was always set to zero. This affects users of LEAF Bering-uClibc 4.3.2. A new upstream version 2.65 which fixes this and the other two bugs found since the 2.64 has been added to the git repository and is additionally available from the Packages page for 4.x. http://leaf.sourceforge.net/bering-uclibc/index.php?module=pagemaster&PAGE_user_op=view_page&PAGE_id=24&MMN_position=41:41

The sole significant change in LEAF Bering-uClibc 4.3-rc2 is an update of busybox to new upstream version 1.20.2. Though it worked pretty well on our test machines and no changes to the busybox configuration has been made, we decided another release candidate and more time for testing is mandatory before releasing a final version.

The list of new features in Bering-uClibc-4.3-beta1 is the longest since 4.0 has been introduced more than one year ago. First of all it comes with the long-awaited Package Dependency Auto-Loading enhancement The new behaviour is that when loading a Package, either using apkg or by including a Package in the LRP variable in leaf.cfg, all those Packages required to successfully run the Package are also loaded, automatically.

A few more words about this enhancement are needed as this really new to our package management.
Actually there are some exceptions to the "...all those Packages..." rule:

Some Packages rely on either one Package or another one. An example is webconf:
This needs a web server, but is happy with either an HTTP server (mhttpd) or an HTTPS server (mhttpds), and these are mutually exclusive - so which one to choose? The answer is neither; one or the other must be loaded manually.

Some Packages do not need extra Packages for their main operation but they do require shared libraries or similar in order to run some rarely-used utility programs. These "optional" Package dependencies are not included in the list to be loaded automatically.

One thing to be aware of is that each Package tries to load its own dependencies (after the requested Package is loaded), and this happens recursively. Where many Packages depend on the same library (libm is a good example) then they all try to load libm. After the dependency has been loaded once the Package loading code spots that the Package is already loaded and does not actually load it again, but you will see messages which show that there has been a repeated request to load a Package.

Another welcome improvement is the new dnsmasq version, which not only provides a dhcpd6 server, but also simple router advertisement features. Thus you may save space and RAM while replacing radvd with
dnsmasqs new capabilities.

Also the The Apple Filing Protocol (AFP) server enhancement requested has been addressed by adding the netatalk Package as well as the request for conntrack-tools.

And finally we've added a new package for NDP Proxy Daemon and of course the usual package updates to new upstream versions.
